About Us!

The National Federation of the Blind of Missouri Columbia Chapter is a vibrant community dedicated to accessibility, education, and independent living for blind people from all walks of life. We inspire blind individuals to embrace life's possibilities and provide the resources needed to turn dreams into reality. Through our work, we demonstrate that blindness is simply another way of living a full, meaningful life. 

We believe that robust education, combined with strong, visible representation by blind people, is the most powerful way to counter the low expectations and isolation that people often associate with blindness. Our community-centered approach allows us to give back directly—supporting individuals' daily needs while actively participating in local events that strengthen our broader community in Columbia and beyond.

2025 Highlights

• Statewide Leadership: We proudly hosted the Annual Missouri National Federation of the Blind Convention in Columbia in April 2025. Every Columbia member contributed to planning and organizing this impactful 4-day event that brought together people from across the state.
• Community Engagement: At Columbia's Earth Day celebration, we provided free Braille scavenger hunt activities for children, along with educational literature and awareness resources that reached several families. This was our first year at Services for Independent Living's Active & Aging Fair, where we reached numerous people and shared information, literature, and Braille education.
• Building Connections: Our annual September picnic and December holiday party continue to draw attendees from Columbia and surrounding areas, creating lasting friendships and support networks. We also host statewide board meetings a couple times each year. 
• Advocacy in Action: During Blind Equality Achievement Month in October, we expanded our impact through school Braille book storytimes, radio appearances, and accessible game nights that educated and entertained.
