About Services for Independent Living

Services for Independent Living (SIL) helps people with disabilities live the lives they choose — independently, safely, and with dignity. From providing medical equipment to teaching life skills and connecting people with housing, transportation, and community resources, SIL is the lifeline many Missourians rely on to stay independent.

Over half of our staff and board members live with disabilities themselves, ensuring every service we provide is rooted in lived experience, empathy, and understanding.

Why Your Donation Matters

Your gift directly fuels independence, access, and dignity for people with disabilities across mid-Missouri. Every dollar helps someone live, work, and participate fully in our community.

  • $25 covers the cost of cleaning supplies and parts to refurbish donated medical equipment like wheelchairs, shower chairs, and walkers — turning community donations into life-changing resources for those who can’t afford them.

  • $50 provides materials and staff time for one Independent Living Skills session with youth preparing for life after graduation — teaching budgeting, cooking, and self-advocacy skills.

  • $100 funds two rides through our transportation program, helping people get to doctors’ appointments, jobs, or community events when no other options exist.

  • $250 supports our advocacy and outreach efforts — from printing educational materials to traveling to Jefferson City to protect the rights and services that low-income and disabled Missourians depend on.

Every contribution removes barriers, restores independence, and strengthens the community we all share.

Community Impact

In 2024, Services for Independent Living served 3,000+ people with disabilities across 7 mid-Missouri counties, providing vital services that make independence possible.

  1. Durable Medical Equipment Reuse: 1,400+ pieces of donated equipment cleaned, repaired, and reissued at no cost.

  2. Case Management: 200 individuals connected to housing, healthcare, benefits, and personal assistance services.

  3. Home Modification Program: 24 accessibility projects completed, including ramps, grab bars, and home safety improvements.

  4. Transportation: 20 calls every week from people needing accessible rides we can’t yet provide due to limited funding.

  5. Advocacy: 500 advocates statewide joined SIL at the Missouri State Capitol to fight for disability rights and fair funding.

Every number represents a real person gaining freedom, safety, and dignity — proof that when our community invests in independence, everyone benefits.

Independence changes everything.
Join us in building a community where everyone — regardless of ability — has the support they need to live life on their own terms.
