Why focus on transportation? Because it impacts every aspect of our lives and our community.
I've had the privilege of serving as the Board President of Local Motion for the past two years. As I reflect back on that time, I see that it has been characterized by changes and challenges. But the mission and goals of Local Motion have remained the same: to advocate for everyone who travels in Columbia, no matter what mode of transportation they use.
As a regular bike commuter and avid trail user, there are a lot of things I love about transportation in Columbia, like our wonderful trail network and the vibrant urban density of our downtown neighborhoods and campuses. The progress toward greater connectivity that has been made did not happen by accident, however, and should not be taken for granted. It is the hard work of Local Motion supporters that keeps Columbia moving forward. And it is hard work, trying to push back against decades of short-sighted policy choices that have forced us into the system of car-dependence. It takes showing up at City Council meetings, organizing neighborhood coalitions, and consulting with city employees to ensure that transportation equity stays at the forefront of the conversation.
When all of us band together, our vision for a brighter and more connected future can become a reality. You are likely aware of the current federal funding climate for small not-for-profit organizations, especially those that focus on advocacy and equity. Now more than ever, your year-end donation provides crucial support to ensure that everyone in Columbia can move freely. In the absence of reliable funding from State and Federal governments, individual contributions make all the difference. Thank you!
