I'm a transportation advocate for a bunch of reasons. (I like biking, clean air sounds nice, etc.) But lately I've been thinking a lot about how our streets affect kids.

A lot of people look at childhood in 2025 and see problems. Some of our concerns may be overblown, but we definitely want things for our kids: physical health, confidence, rich social lives, and independence. One way to give them those things is to put them outside and let them move around on their own. Unfortunately, the idea of children walking to the park or biking to the store unsupervised sounds scary to a lot of adults. And a big reason for that is road safety.

When it comes to transportation, federal, state, and local policies have failed our young people. From hood heights on trucks and SUVs to a lack of sidewalks and bike paths, we haven't made it safe for kids to be kids. (Nostalgia is a tricky thing, but there's a reason that your image of the "good old days" includes kids biking around on their own.)

Fortunately, we can fix this. Through outreach, education, and advocacy, Local Motion supporters help build the type of city where all people—regardless of age, income, or ability—can get where they want to go. We host fun biking and walking events for all types of families, and we show up to City Hall to push for projects and policies that make streets safer for kids (and everybody else).

Your CoMoGives donation enables another 25 years of grassroots transportation advocacy. Donate today and stay involved all year long, because our kids deserve it (and so do we).
