Riding my bike has been a favorite part of my day since I began bike-commuting more than a decade ago. I've learned to embrace cold weather, how to stay relatively comfortable in a variety of inclement weather conditions, and how to navigate to my yoga studio, to hiking trails, to friends' houses, to restaurants, and to local events. I've also experienced firsthand the challenges facing cyclists like me: poor cycling infrastructure, distracted drivers, and speeding cars.
Too many people in our community have a hard time getting around. The high costs of car ownership put an undue burden on working families, and a lack of sidewalks and protected bike lanes make it harder for young people to travel independently. At the same time, inadequate bus service keeps many or our neighbors from getting to work on time, seeing a doctor, or making their voices heard at City Council meetings. On top of all that, increasing car traffic leads to crashes, poor air quality, and accelerating climate chaos.
Fortunately, we know the solutions, and Columbia has a long tradition of grassroots transportation activism. For 25 years donors, volunteers, and advocates like me and you have helped spread the word about walking, biking, and riding transit, and we’ve scored some great policy wins. We still have a lot of work to do, and it's going to take a big local effort to make the changes we need.
By joining me in donating to Local Motion's CoMoGives campaign, you're supporting outreach, education, and advocacy work that pays off all year long. From hosting beloved events like Bike, Walk & Wheel week to rallying Columbia residents to show up at crucial City Council meetings, Local Motion makes Columbia a safer, more accessible, and more vibrant place to live. For 25 years, supporters like you and me have made that possible.
